Roots and Everyday Life

If you wander down the colourful streets of Muizenberg early enough, before the surfers rush the waves and the breeze carries the first smell of coffee from the beachfront cafés, you might spot Malvin with his beaming smile and relaxed, easy stride. He is the sort of person you notice not because he is loud or flashy, but because he radiates the calm confidence of someone who knows exactly who he is and what he is working for.

Malvin is the very first creator to join Umgani.com, an honour he accepts with humility, a grin, and usually a joke about how he is still waiting for the red carpet and confetti cannons. At home in Muizenberg, he lives with his wife Ruth and their two energetic daughters, both in primary school and already showing signs of artistic talent. Ruth crochets with the speed and precision of a magician pulling scarves from a hat, and Malvin often points proudly at her work and says, “She is the real boss of the house. I just make the animals!”

Spirit and Personality

Friendly, reliable, hardworking, and endlessly creative, Malvin is someone who puts family at the centre of everything. Even while balancing different jobs, he maintains a gentle humour and warm optimism that people quickly come to love.

When not creating or driving passengers as an Uber driver, he spends time exactly where he feels happiest. He enjoys going to the beach with his family, kicking a football around on a Sunday, or exploring one of Cape Town’s many hiking trails. His favourite meal is a proper braai with meat, pap, and good company.

Craft and Creativity

Malvin creates vibrant, character filled beaded animals that look as if they might scurry off the table if you look away for too long. If you have browsed the markets in Kalk Bay or wandered through creative stalls around Cape Town, you may already have encountered his shimmering giraffes, wise owls, bold rhinos, or the occasional slightly confused looking warthog. He often laughs and says, “That one was experimental.”

Beading is only one side of his artistic world. Malvin also collects scrap metal such as old bolts, gears, and bicycle parts. To most people, these items look like junk, but in his hands they become the beginnings of beautiful sculptures. His workshop table often resembles a treasure map made of spark plugs and possibilities.

Malvin is building a future for his family one bead, one sculpture, and one honest day of work at a time. Umgani.com is proud to have him as their very first creator and even prouder to share his story and craftsmanship with the world.
